01 — How it works
How the Pictionary Word List Generator works
Our tool is a no-fuss random word generator built specifically for Pictionary, the classic drawing-and-guessing party game. Pick a category, set a difficulty, hit the big button, and a fresh word appears. The on-screen 60-second timer keeps each round moving so nobody loses momentum. Everything runs locally in your browser — no accounts, no installs, and no waiting for ads.
①
1. Choose a category
All Words, Easy, Medium, Hard, Christmas, Movies, Funny, Adults, Kids, Animals, or Food. Each category pulls from a curated word bank of hundreds of entries.
②
2. Hit Generate
A random Pictionary word appears in big readable type with a difficulty tag so the picturist knows what they're in for. The space bar works as a shortcut.
③
3. Start the round timer
The picturist starts the 60-second timer (or pick 30, 45, 90, or 120 seconds), draws, and their teammates guess until the buzzer goes off.
02 — Categories
Generate Pictionary words by category and difficulty
Different groups want different things. A family playing on Sunday afternoon needs different words than a college house party at 1 AM. Our pictionary word generator covers the full range with carefully curated lists in each category.

Easy Pictionary words
Easy Pictionary words are concrete, everyday objects and animals that almost anyone can recognise from a quick sketch — apple, cat, sun, house, tree, bicycle. They're perfect when you're playing with young children, beginners, or mixed-ability groups. The picturist can finish the drawing in 20–30 seconds, which keeps energy high and turns moving.

Medium Pictionary words
Medium difficulty words add a small twist: they're still recognisable objects or activities, but they require more than one element to communicate. Think helicopter, sandwich, sunglasses, lighthouse, jellyfish. Players have to plan their drawing a bit. This is the sweet spot for most adult and teen games.
Hard Pictionary words
Hard Pictionary words are the abstract and conceptual ones: gravity, democracy, nostalgia, procrastination, photosynthesis. They force creative thinking — you can't just draw the word, you have to draw something it implies. Hard words separate the casual sketchers from the serious players and produce the funniest rounds of the night.
03 — Christmas
Christmas Pictionary word list generator
December is peak Pictionary season. Our Christmas Pictionary word list generator is loaded with holiday-themed words drawn from the four classic Christmas categories: Christmas songs and carols, Christmas food and traditions, Christmas characters and movies, and winter activities.
Words include Santa Claus, reindeer, mistletoe, gingerbread house, candy cane, snowflake, snowman, Christmas tree, stocking, ornaments, sleigh, eggnog, hot chocolate, Rudolph, the Grinch, Frosty the Snowman, Jingle Bells, Silent Night, Home Alone, Elf, Polar Express, North Pole, Santa's workshop, ice skating, snowball fight, gumdrops, fruitcake, wreath, candy canes, Christmas crackers, Buddy the Elf, Jack Frost, and dozens more. Set the category to 'Christmas' to draw exclusively from this list.

04 — Adults
Pictionary word generator for adults
Looking for a Pictionary word generator for adults? The 'Adults' category steps up the abstraction. You'll get words like bureaucracy, mortgage, mid-life crisis, networking, conference call, side hustle, IKEA furniture, jury duty, marriage counseling, and DMV — the everyday absurdities of adult life that produce big laughs at the table.
If you want Pictionary words for adults that lean into humour rather than abstraction, switch to the 'Funny' category. The two pair beautifully — start funny to warm everyone up, then move to adults once the wine kicks in.
05 — Movies
Pictionary word generator for movies
The Movies category turns Pictionary into a film-buff face-off. The list includes family classics like Shrek, Finding Nemo, Toy Story, The Lion King, Frozen, Moana, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins, and 101 Dalmatians, alongside grown-up favourites: The Matrix, Jurassic Park, Pulp Fiction, The Godfather, Casablanca, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, James Bond, Inception, and many more.
Movie titles are particularly fun in Pictionary because the picturist has to break a multi-word title into separate visual elements — first word, second word, big word, small word — which is the same syllable-based pantomime trick used in charades. It's a great fallback category when the main word bank is starting to repeat.
Toy Story
The Lion King
Frozen
Star Wars
Shrek
Jurassic Park
Indiana Jones
Avatar
Inception
The Matrix
Finding Nemo

06 — Kids
Kid Pictionary word generator
When you're playing with younger children, the standard Pictionary word list is too abstract and frustrating. The Kids category is built from words six-year-olds can recognise and draw: apple, sun, cat, dog, butterfly, ice cream, balloon, bicycle, snowman, robot, teddy bear, birthday cake.
Pair the kid pictionary word generator with a longer timer (90 or 120 seconds), and you get a game that works for every age at the table without anyone feeling left behind. It's also great for ESL classrooms and speech therapy sessions.
07 — Funny
Funny Pictionary word generator
The Funny category is full of words that almost always produce laughter when drawn: chicken dance, moonwalk, awkward hug, whoopee cushion, banana peel, tooth fairy, clown car, llama, platypus, rubber duck, head over heels, when pigs fly. These are great party openers because they instantly lower the bar and remind everyone that Pictionary is supposed to be silly.
08 — Rules
Pictionary game rules — quick refresher
Pictionary is a drawing-and-guessing party game invented by Robert Angel and first published in 1985. The official version uses cards in five categories: Person/Place/Animal, Object, Action, Difficult, and All-Play. Teams take turns sending one player (the picturist) to draw while their teammates guess in 60 seconds.
When using a digital Pictionary word generator like ours, the setup is simpler: split into two or more teams, pick the picturist for the round, generate a word, start the 60-second timer, and try to score the most correct guesses. No pencils get stuck in the box, no cards get lost.
What the picturist can and can't do
The picturist may draw anything except letters, numbers, or symbols. No talking, no pointing at things in the room, no gestures or pantomime. Sound effects are also out. If the picturist breaks a rule, the round usually ends and the other team can guess for a bonus point.
What counts as a correct guess
The guess has to match the displayed word closely. Singular vs. plural usually counts, and small variations are usually accepted (Houseboat / House boat). Synonyms typically don't count — you need the actual word. Decide as a group before you start how strict you want to be.

10 — Tips
Tips for playing Pictionary with a word generator
✎
Use the difficulty tag
Each generated word comes with a difficulty tag (Easy, Medium, or Hard). If you want a balanced game, alternate difficulties between rounds. If you want a tournament, lock everyone to Hard.
▢
Cast to a TV for parties
On Chromecast, AirPlay, or any HDMI-capable laptop, the word screen makes a perfect host display. The picturist secretly reads the word, then turns to the easel or whiteboard.
↪
Skip judiciously
If a generated word is impossible for the group (a movie no one has seen, a concept too abstract), allow one skip per team per game. Hitting Generate again is fine — just don't abuse it.
⤭
Mix categories mid-game
Change the category between rounds to keep things fresh. A round of Funny, then a round of Movies, then a round of Hard. Variety is what keeps Pictionary alive for hours.
11 — FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is this Pictionary word list generator really free?
Yes. The whole site is free to use with no account required and no paywall. We run minimal ads to cover hosting, and that's it. You can use it for school, work, family parties, twitch streams — anywhere.
How many words are in your generator?
We have several hundred curated words across ten categories — easy, medium, hard, Christmas, movies, funny, adults, kids, animals, and food. The 'All Words' option pulls from the combined easy/medium/hard pool of over 230 words.
Can I use this on my phone?
Yes. The site is fully responsive and works on every device — iPhone, Android, iPad, tablet, laptop, or smart TV browser. The big word display is easy to read from across a room.
Is there a Christmas Pictionary word list generator?
Yes — choose the 'Christmas' category from the dropdown. It pulls from over 70 holiday-themed words: Santa Claus, reindeer, mistletoe, candy cane, Frosty the Snowman, Jingle Bells, Home Alone, Elf, and many more.
Do you have Pictionary words for adults?
Yes — we have two adult-friendly categories. 'Adults' contains abstract grown-up concepts (mortgage, networking, mid-life crisis). 'Funny' contains universally silly words (chicken dance, whoopee cushion, awkward hug). Both produce great party rounds.
How long is each Pictionary round?
The classic rule is 60 seconds per round. Our built-in timer defaults to 60 but you can switch to 30, 45, 90, or 120 seconds for harder or easier games.
Can I print the word list?
Not directly from the generator, but each refresh shows a new word and you can use your browser's print function on this page to capture the visible words. For party games we recommend using the generator live — it's faster and you'll never repeat yourself by accident.
What's the difference between Pictionary and charades?
Charades is acted out silently with your body and hands; Pictionary is drawn on paper or a whiteboard. The word lists are similar but Pictionary leans toward objects and visual concepts, while charades leans toward actions and phrases.
